I met Helen in the super cool Facebook Group Paleo in Perth, if you haven’t checked it out yet, definitely do – if you are in WA that is!! Helen and I have met a couple of times at Heirloom when Pete Evans does his amazing meals – gosh I am so grateful to Pete for helping to create such an awesome community!
Helen’s passion is helping people understand their bodies, what goes into their bodies and how it affects their overall health. She’s a bit in love the quote by Thomas Edison (1847-1931)
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his/her patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.”
Helen has been involved with Natural Medicine for 22 years. She is extremely passionate about helping people reach their health goals and take charge of their own Wellness and that of their families.
She is a “Food is Medicine” advocate while also using a combination of herbal medicine and nutritional supplements when needed. Her own health challenges have seen her overcome cancer at age 29yr, and most recently treat herself for an Autoimmune Thyroiditis.
Her most recent health scare was Thyroid nodules that very quickly became so enlarged she needed surgery. The biochemistry came back as suspect of cancer. Helen only has half of her thyroid and denied the medication as is committed to managing her food and lifestyle.
“I am committed to assisting others gain the knowledge to heal themselves!”
Helen is a qualified Naturopath, Bowen Therapist and Mindd Practitioner (which encompasses Metabolic/ Immunologic/Neurologic/ Digestive/ Developmental disorders) strengthening her knowledge on treating children with Learning difficulties, autism and spectrum disorders and is currently undergoing external studies in Bioindividual Nutrition.

PAP 5: Amy Whalan – Primal Punk Fitness, Paleo and Body Building
Friday Jul 14, 2017
Friday Jul 14, 2017
Today I am joined by lean, mean pocket rocket Amy Whalan of Primal Punk Fitness. Amy and I connected through the Paleo in Perth Facebook Group (which is totally awesome, you got to check it out). Ames and I are big Mark Sisson devotees and love hanging out with Pete Evans when he hosts his amazing Paleo inspired meals at Heirloom in Perth.
Amy used the Paleo eating lifestyle against professional recommendation and the primal way of training to prepare for 2 body-building competitions, where she took home 7 placements. This experiment inspired Amy to show other woman that you can still honour your appetite while getting lean and strong. Calories, macros, numbers and scales are completely unnecessary, and in fact has seen the detriment of this mentally for so many.
Amy loved phys-ed, netball and athletics in school. At quite a young age of 17 Amy began to lift weights in the home gym her Dad would use and hasn’t stopped since. Amy gained a confidence with her strength gains that she says is indescribable until you feel it for yourself. Amy would love to see every female experience this confidence as it is life-changing in every aspect of life.
While working in the mines FIFO in her early 20’s, Amy would continue to research her passion of nutrition and exercise, trialling her new discoveries, ranging from vegan to high meat diets.
In 2010, Amy discovered paleo, where everything changed including energy levels, focus, endurance, strength and fat loss. 20 days in, Amy knew she wouldn’t turn back, she is living proof this way of life is sustainable and that feeling awesome everyday isn’t just for super-heroes.
Mark’s Daily Apple was the inspiration and in fact killed 2 birds with one stone to find information on chronic cardio and over-training. The criteria rang true as she was exhausted, inflamed and craved sugar all the time – despite being “off the chart” fit. Amy dialled her training down to more than half and the results were astounding. Amy became stronger, leaner, more energised and focused. On top of that her appetite stabilised and the cravings dissipated due to cutting out the toxic grains we have been told are so good for us.
Amy would like to help other woman and men prep for comp or to just embark on a health journey to become stronger through the effortless principals she has been sustaining over the past 7 years. Amy is passionate about teaching people health and fitness is something that you live and breathe because you want to not because you feel you need to. Ames has helped many clients, family and friends transform their lifestyle and mind set for life with these amazing principals. Check her face book page – Primal Punk Fitness.

Friday Jun 30, 2017
Friday Jun 30, 2017
On the show today I am joined by super inspirational Neil McLagan. Neil is a Type 1 Diabetic with other auto immune diseases and he is successfully managing his conditions, with a high fat, super low carb ketogenic diet.
To raise awareness of this alternative way of living, Neil is riding his bike from Perth to Sydney!
I met Neil at a Pete Evans dinner at Heirloom earlier this year where Pete surprised Neil by asking him to take the stage and tell us all about his “Crossing For a Cause” mission.
You can find out more about Neil and contribute to his cause here: https://crossingforacauseat1djourney.wordpress.com/
Neil is 35 years old and lives in Perth Western Australia with his family. He is a Customs Broker and an amateur fat adapted athlete. Neil also love cooking, gardening and good coffee. Neil is competitive in life and wont step away from a challenge. Neil is living with an auto immune disease and as a result, type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease and Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism.
Neil is an advocate for management of his type 1 diabetes (and overall better health) using a low carbohydrate, whole foods lifestyle. This has been a breakthrough for him and after conducting his own research into it’s efficacy, firmly believe that it’s the optimal choice for his health. Combined with regular exercise, these are the important cornerstones in his type 1 diabetes management.
Neil believes in living a life where his disease is not a barrier towards fulfilment and to practise the art of being grateful. He also believes in the value of true connection and networking. In creating his website, Neil hopes that he can help others in a way that his experiences have helped him.

PAP 3: Helen Baker – weightloss and Primalflavours
Friday Jun 16, 2017
Friday Jun 16, 2017
From the time I had my first child in my early 20’s, Helen found she had been gaining weight little by little. Helen continuously tried to slim down by eating the diet most mainstream thinking considers ‘healthy’ – everything low fat and just lean meats with only occasional treats and also indulged in a glass of wine or three every night. She would yo-yo diet up and down and back up again before eventually ending up over 100kgs!
In 2015, Helen was lucky, her Doctor broke the established rules and gave me a ‘What To Eat’ food list that at the time she didn’t know was primarily Paleo.
From that time Helen has lost over 40kgs and began learning more about how our body works regarding hormones, health, nutrition and of course how to lose weight.
Helen went on to meet her current partner, who had already lost over 60kgs eating the same way, and he introduced her to Mark’s Daily Apple and together they learned even more about the primal lifestyle.
In May 2016, they started their own Primal Flavours business to sell homemade beef jerky and sugar-free healthy treats, and Helen began studying Primal Nutrition. Helen believes that if people had a better understanding how their bodies worked, they would find it easy to live healthy.
Helen offers plenty of actionable tips in this show so be sure to tune in!!

PAP 2: Jodie Gardner – Obesity, OCD & Oils
Friday Jun 02, 2017
Friday Jun 02, 2017
Jodie Gardner (BEnvSc) is an activist, a writer, a singer, a Kojonup farm girl, an Environmental Scientist, a Proud Paleo Parent, a Tantric Earth Goddess, a DōTERRA essential oil lover and recently, a Sherlock Holmes Mystery Solver. Battling obesity and an obsessive compulsive eating disorder since childhood, Jodie began “dieting” at aged 12 and tried around 30 different diets from Jenny Craig to Lite’n’Easy (for the third time) 25 years later.
Some diets (mostly protein based) worked in the short term, most didn’t and none were sustainable long term. She binge ate, suffered cravings constantly, was crippled with guilt about the food she put into her and her daughter’s body, ashamed because she was considered to be “smart” but couldn’t solve the biggest Sherlock Holmes Mystery of her own life and felt sick and anxious at social gatherings with her obsessive food thoughts.
In October 2015, Jodie discovered the pure botanical DōTERRA essential oils, fell in love with them and they began to work their magic on her emotional wellbeing and her wellness. She founded the Earth Goddess Collective with two business partners in 2015 to bring light to people’s lives and nurture journeys of healing and growth. The oils bought with them increased positivity and support and she was finally able to commit to adopting the Paleo lifestyle she’d been thinking about for several years, in May 2016.
Over the following 10 months to the present day, Jodie lost 26kg, dropping under 100kg for the first time since she was 21. This triggered a major emotional release and she shared her story online. The response was phenomenal.
Jodie would like nothing more than to support those who relate to her story on their own journeys. She runs a number of workshops that aim to educate, inspire and delight via the Earth Goddess Collective (Facebook page) She also hopes that traveling around Australia with her daughter and homeschooling her as well as showing her our gorgeous country will be on the cards in the future
